Collier Heights Celebrates Local Historic Designation

On February 22, 2014 The Collier Heights Community Association will host a Gala celebrating obtaining local historic designation.

The gala will include a “Museum” room which will feature not only archives from the citizens of Collier Heights but also my portraits and images that tell the story of a neighborhood of single family homes and their owners in northwest Atlanta, Georgia that was developed, financed, designed and constructed in the 1950’s and 1960’s predominantly by and for Black Americans.  Through the later half of the 20th century, this neighborhood acted as a safe environment for children to gain an education, be active in the neighborhood, and take action in the civil rights movement. And as such has built and utilized social capital to change the fabric of America.

Students Curate Students

STUDENTS CURATE STUDENTS

The School of Museum of Fine Arts has chosen:
The 2014 winning Students Curate Students proposal is “The Thing We Carry: Objects in America” (working title) by Museum School students Reneé M. Browne (MFA 2013) and Lydia Harris (MFA 2014).
Saying of their exhibition concept, Browne and Harris’s statement says: “Being members of a society that promotes individualism, we often satisfy our need to belong be acquiring objects that provide a material connection to others. These objects take on a value beyond their utility, becoming symbols of our identities in terms of characteristics such as status, gender, and race. Through these photographs, the five artists we have chosen present various arrangements of the personal objects that become physical representations of their owners.”
“The Thing We Carry: Objects in America” will be on view at the Museum of Fine Arts Courtyard Gallery, March 8 – August 17, 2014.
